Orlando Magic Flies Cancer Patient to Life-saving
Treatment
Orlando FL — (February 27, 2006)—The Orlando Magic traveled to
Los Angeles today for tomorrow’s game against the Lakers. They flew
on the team jet. This was a special trip, however. Traveling along
with the team was cancer patient Susan Sugarman. Susan is traveling
with her husband Sam from their home in Palm City Florida for specialized
treatment at St. Vincent Medical Center in LA.
When Susan was diagnosed with cancer, her family’s life was changed
forever. Treatment options and financial concerns are just part
of the critical decisions that must be made. Many of those decisions
center around acquiring the best treatment available and how to
get to those locations, often far from home. With many cancer patients,
immune systems are not equipped to fight off infection and exposure
to colds and germs often found in crowded airports and potentially
threatening for a cancer patient. For many cancer patients and their
families traveling for medical reasons becomes a major financial
burden but with the help of Corporate Angel Network, travel can
become a less stressful part of their lives.
Orlando Magic is one of 539 major corporations who generously participate
in Corporate Angel Network by giving cancer patients a free lift
to life-extending treatment in the empty seats on their routine
flights.
Corporate Angel Network arranges free flights for cancer patients
using the empty seats on corporate aircraft. Since its founding
nearly 25 years ago, CAN has grown to include 530 participating
corporations, five paid staff, and a team of 50 part-time volunteers
who work with patients, physicians, corporate flight departments,
and leading treatment centers to coordinate medical travel needs
of cancer patients with the scheduled flight activity of participating
corporations. To date, CAN has arranged nearly 25,000 flights and
currently provides about 200 patient flights a month. CAN has received
numerous awards in recognition of its service to cancer patients,
including The Volunteer Action Award, the highest volunteer award
from the President of the United States. For more information please
